Human Habit Pattern
Human beings
are creatures of habit. This is not inherently bad. Good habits, in fact, are
deeply desirable. You can get into the good habit of meditating daily, of
nurturing your relationships, of listening to your body, and of choosing good
mentors.
A habit is
simply a strongly-reinforced pattern of thinking, acting, or believing.
Transforming negative habits requires a reversal and redirection of your energy
so that old, negative ways of thinking and living are replaced by new,
healthier habits or patterns of thinking and living.
Thought is energy
When you
think a certain thought, you put energy into motion. That motion eventually
will create a certain effect or outcome. The more you think the thought, the
stronger the intention of that thought gets, the more it expands, and the more
effectively you are able to create whatever it is that you are in the habit of
thinking.
The
following exercise will help you reinforce and bring into your life some of the
habits and characteristics that are patterned at the core level of your being.
Action Exercise: Transforming Your Habit Pattern
Habits to be
rearranged: ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Alternatives to those habits: ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Find a
comfortable position. Close your eyes. Enter your ideal state, the state of
relaxation, and go into the causal domain. Now think about a situation in which
changing or rearranging a habit was limited by an unwanted emotion or a
limiting feeling.
Find the
positive intention behind that emotion by asking yourself, “What does this let
me know I want? What is it in this emotion that is positive and useful?”
At this
point, you are ready to create alternatives that will satisfy that positive
intention. If they are coming from the causal domain, the alternatives will be
a close representation of who, and what, you want to be.
Envision
yourself making these alternatives a habit. Mentally rehearse these
alternatives, and experience their positive benefits.
Now take a
deep breath, and as you exhale, become aware of the qualities of your ideal
state. Bring those qualities forward into the present, as you finish this
exercise.
